Because

There are usually two reason why I do things – because I can't say no and just because. These two rather large brackets have led me into numerous interesting (and admittedly often enjoyable) positions over the years. This one is a bit different because it's something I want to do.

So what am I doing? I'm going to read ten different books in each of ten different categories throughout 2011. That's one year, one hundred books. My better half is also going to be undertaking the challenge; same categories but different books.

The inspiration was something I stumbled across not so long ago in another blog from this (soon to be last) year. It seemed interesting, a worthy challenge, and a good way to try and expand what I read by picking up things that are outside of what I usually go for. It's one of the reasons I got involved in a book club, this is just on a larger scale.

It's an awful lot of books, but not a stupid amount more than I've read in each of the last couple of years. Plus if it was going to be easy, it probably wouldn't be worth it. It's good to push yourself, right? The rules and categories can wait till another post and from then on it this blog of mine will theoretically take the form of a post for every book I read. Just don't hold your breath on that front, high ambitions have a habit of not coming to fruition.

So we've adjusted the rules to suit what we want to do, debated and whittled down the categories to ten that we're both happy with, and are coming to the end of current books. Ladies, gentlemen, please start your engines for the new year's madcap reading scheme. Why? Because.
